A SELECTION OF HAIKU AND TRADITIONAL VERSE

Gossips

Take pity on those unfortunates
Who -
See much more than
They really do,
And babble, babble, babble
To anyone who'll listen:
"It's absolutely true!
I say,
I saw them just
The other day -
They got into HER car
And drove away!"
"Of course we know
What they were up to -
Her man GONE and all?
Of course they were
Having a ball!  I mean -
It's OBVIOUS!
Isn't it?

Take pity on those unfortunates
Who -
See much more than
They really do,
And babble, babble, babble
To anyone who'll listen.
"Did you hear about
John and Jane,
Going out together
Again?
I saw them just
The other day.
They got into HIS car
And drove away!"
"Of course they didn't
Return for two hours,
At least -
All laughing and smiles?
We know where they were!  I mean -
It's OBVIOUS!
Isn't it?

Take pity on those unfortunates
Who -
See much more than
They really do,
And babble, babble, babble
To anyone who'll listen.

Seasons
(A Haiku Sequence)

The first dream -
the touching of fingertips
the holding of hands

Cherry blossoms -
another joins another
with each brushstroke

Summer breeze -
two butterflies touch and part
touch and part

Autumn -
the ringing telephone
no one at home

Winter -
crowded around the fire
Alone

Gulls
(A Haiku Sequence)

Sunrise -
a solitary gull
stretches its wings

Morning -
from somewhere offshore
a gull's cry

Midday -
flocks of gulls hover and dive
hover and dive

Afternoon -
gulls perched on pilings
five or six

Evening -
fishing boats returning
screeching gulls overhead

A silhouetted gull
flies along the coast line -
Sunset
